Stumbleupon & Digg Thumbnail Maker is a simple WordPress plugin that allows you to specifically select a thumbnail for a post when your post is submitted to some social media sites.
StumbleUpon for example, it automatically create a thumbnail & attach to users ‘favorite’ when the web page is submitted. However, it does not always create a image thumbnail as what we want. Sometime, it just capture the whole web page or even takes the image ad on your page & use it as thumbnail.
Without any modification to the web page, we will have little control over what image should be used for the thumbnail. If the thumbnail is wrongly selected, the ‘favorite’ will becomes less interesting & it will attracts less clicks or stumbles. The following illustration shows two difference thumbnails from techmiliue.com submitted to Stumbleupon, which one do you want to click first?
So, I decided to create WordPress plugin to accomplish this task. Use this plugin to insert some image & html herder tags into the post for the social media sites like Stumbleupon or Digg to pick up.
Latest Version: 1.0
Here are some features that come with this plugin:
- The plugin will ONLY inserts the thumbnail image specify by you on the fly right before the contents when your post is submitted to Stumbleupon. At all other times, the thumbnail image is not included in your post.
- A header tag is inserted to the header of your post for Digg submission.
- You can switch to javascript instead of php for Stumbleupon website detection. This is useful when you have other cache plugin installed, such as ‘WP Super Cache’, etc. as most of the time your web pages are static.
- You can specify different thumbnail image for different post.

I have no idea what I am doing wrong but my thumbnail image selector isn’t working…. It was installed properly. Just want to make sure I am not putting the info in wrong or doing something wrong.
This plugin is not function like wp thumbnail, you need to manually type in the image url & click preview.
Will it work for reddit too?
Never try in Reddit before …
It works in reddit pretty well, but doesn’t work in stumbleupon. It keeps grabbing the webpage thumbnail
Noted. the bug is due to stumbleupon referrer page … will try to rectify it.
Here are two examples:
stumbles like this one happened a few times after I installed the plugin:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/lovemeow.com/2011/01/the-ginger-one-eye-wonder-cat/
The thumbnail is supposed to be the first image you see in the post. I manually pasted the image url and clicked preview.
This one happened recently:
http://www.stumbleupon.com/url/lovemeow.com/2011/01/qb-a-little-survivor-kitty/
It just grabs the web page thumbnail now.
I’ve been using your Thumbnail Maker for about 2 months and it was working perfectly and I loved it!
But I uploaded a new ad network to my blog and since then no matter what I do Stumbleupon is only capturing a thumbnail of the first page of my blog and is ignoring the the photo I’ve uploaded to The Thumbnail Maker.
Any ideas as to what the problem is?
Michelle
Maybe Stumbleupon has change the way they used to capture the thumbnail … I need to have a closer look.
I’m getting do_sud_thumb whenever I search for recently made posts…
I believe this is caused by the stumble upon plugin. Please help me resolve…anyone. I really like this plugin.
The site is http://hairwegoproducts.com
You can try searching for ‘Oribe’ to test.
^^^ FYI that only happens if using the javascript version so I turned it off but i do use w3 cache.
Can the javascript be fixed? Whats the difference?
Ive inserted the at the very buttom of my header but its still showing up the sites picture. Any way to fix it?
Thanks for this nice post! By the way I am a fan of Q Adsense – i love it
Thanks !
When I do searches on my site, I get “do_sud_thumb” and a partial file description before the post content.
Example:
do_sud_thumb(“http://”,”Southwest Co. Cork”)
This disappears when the plugin is disabled. Apparently I’m not the only one, as someone else posted in the WP forums about this issue: http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-stumbleupon-digg-thumbnail-maker-stumble-upon-upgrade?replies=3
(BTW, the link from the FAQ section of the wordpress page does not work: http://techmilieu.com/sumbleupon-and-digg-thumbnail-maker I found this page through Google.)
Any updates coming? Alternately, any idea how to fix this? For now, I’m disabling the plugin unless I’m submitting something to SU, but I’d rather have it active.
Thanks very much!
My apology for not updating this plugin for quite a while … please keep this plugin installed & deactivate it in your wordpress. You will be notify through WP once it has been updated. Thanks.
