This was a little painful to read. Might want to read things over before you publish them? Or if English isn’t your native language, maybe find someone else to edit it for you.
Also, of all the .pdf viewers in the world, how can you recommend Acrobat?
To Jack Vermicelli:
Whine, whine, whine. I don’t see you doing anything productive. I would love to see your epic list.
To Darcy:
It’s a special thing called criticism. If no one brings it up, the author won’t get better. The comment Jack made was far from an attack, if he was to have insulted the author without giving any advice, that is grounds for anger. Jack, however, did not. He told the author, quite respectfully, that his English isn’t great, and gave him a method of rectifying it.
It should also be noted that the “You can’t do better” argument holds about as much water as a rock. The easiest analogy is; “You don’t have to be a chef to know that the food tastes like shit.” Movie critics don’t have to make movies, software critics don’t have to make software. They do all know, however, what can be done, what should be done, and what shouldn’t be done in that particular area, and they base criticism on that. Jack knows the construct of the English language, and he based his criticism on that, not his knowledge of free programs.
No Darcy, it is not Jack that is whining, it is you. Learn to take criticism, or be prepared to fail.
This message brought to you by reality.
I appreciate that for what it’s worth, Creat.
@Darcy, @Creat
Thanks for your comments, my English isn’t great is for sure & need improvement. Writing is one of the challenging aspects of my life, especially English is not my native language. I willing to accept criticism or advice, as long as it is not attack (that’s why I still publish the comments in this post).
Jack Vermicelli did help me to up previously. He has made some helpful suggestion to my writing in one of the older post. Check out his comment here: http://techmilieu.com/keep-your-firefox-plugin-up-to-date/comment-page-1#comment-302
Once again, thanks to both of you & also Jack.
I agree. Adobe Reader is the slowest most bloated, time consuming PDF reader out there. It is rediculously HUGE, and they obviously must be being paid by hard drive manufacturers to fill ‘em up. How can a reader such as Foxit, use so much less space and still offer more?
I don’t know, as I am not a programmer. All I do know is … I agree with you on this comment.
Finally, WHY is Spybot not on the list? It starts to make me wonder about this list, even though I did find a couple good softwares.
I believe Spybot is similar to Ms Security Essential or AVG … I’m not sure. Thanks for sharing the info, I will give it a try.
I owe you the same courtesy and will take a look at Ms Security Essential!
AVG? Is more of a on-the-fly virus protection, but SpyBot offers protection against most rogue threats (including unknown threats), with its “TeaTimer” settings.
Thanks for putting together this list! Good Job.
What are you talking about Jack? This was perfectly easy to read. If this person is not a native English speaker, then their English is spectacular and better than most native English speakers here in the US.
@Frank Throed, examples:
“As a today, CCleaner has over 350 million remarkable downloads!”
“It is a chat client with many stuff to offer. It is a social networking tool that be able to alert you when new messages arrive.”
“PhotoPerfect Express maximize the potential of your photos without spending hours in front of a computer. PhotoPerfect Express create image enhancement with just 3 simple steps. It create stunning results without any technical knowledge.”
The article is perfectly understandable; I’m not debating that. I just said that it could use editing. The author clearly has a commendable grasp of a difficult second language, yes, and many native English speakers would do worse, I agree again. Neither of those facts diminish my point about how a published document should read, however.
Hello, Jack,
As a native American blogging in a second language, I sympathize with the author of this blog.
What can be difficult for native speakers/writers to understand is the fact that it can be extremely difficult, time-consuming or, possibly, expensive to have someone revise our texts.
And we all have our reasons for choosing to blog, despite our limitations.
As long as the texts are understandable, as long as we know that it´s a non-native writer, can´t we have a little patience? Can’t we give these authors some understanding and support?
To my mind there are two types of criticism:
1. destructive criticism – points out defects without teaching truly workable solutions.
2. constructive criticism – points out viable solutions, teaches.
I believe you had good intentions, but I disagree with your approach.
You wrote: “This was a little painful to read. Might want to read things over before you publish them? Or if English isn’t your native language, maybe find someone else to edit it for you.”
Kind sir, what you wrote there was a little painful for me to read. Since I cope with a challenge that is quite similar to the one our author faces, I saw your words as a flat-out criticism – destructive, although perhaps well-intentioned – that seems to assume some sort of lack of seriousness on the part of the author, as if he isn´t doing everything he reasonably can to produce the best texts he reasonably can – and the key there is “reasonable”. There appears to be a subtle arrogance in this kind of criticism. Have you ever considered the possibility that the author does not have access to someone who can do native-level editing (why don´t YOU offer to do it?????).
Instead of just producing a list of mistakes (which can make one want to give up), how about showing him a corrected version? Or do you prefer that he simply give up, since he can´t meet your standards?
Internet is a very international forum. We are going to run into all sorts of “accents”. I sometimes find myself obliged to publish articles without revisions by native speakers – for various types of reasons. And, once in a while, I get a comment about a mistake in my Portuguese. I genuinely appreciate the comments that tell me what the correct form would be and send a thank-you note. But, concerning the ones that simply criticize or simply tell me to have somebody edit before I publish – well, these don´t help me in any way.
If you´re truly interested in helping Philip Ze improve his blog, then my suggestion would be for you to select one or two of his worst mistakes in a given text and show him how to write it correctly. Over time, he´ll learn and improve his English – and will probably be very grateful to you.
Otherwise, perhaps it would be nice to leave him in peace about his English – which is quite understandable.
By English-as-a-second-language standards, he does quite well and should be encouraged, not discouraged.
Hope this makes sense to you, because I do think you meant well…
K
Hi,
Why are you so picky with english expression and stuff, I am sure that you got all the article was trying to say, it is not our problem english is the language of the internet even though is such a poor to explain things.
Thanks for the article anyway, it is a great collection of software to keep in mind.
I have to agree that some are not really useful or recommended like adobe, digsby, staruplite and stuff but basicly it rocks.
Keep going :)
Because it’s free?
You should also try SSuite Office for a free office suite. They have a whole range of office suites that are free for download.
Their software also don’t need to run on Java or .NET, like so many open source office suites, so it makes their software very small and efficient.
You may try these links:

or

or

Hay Excellent list op applications :) Really like PC Inspector :)
Keep up the good work.
M
Seriously, nice list, but people aren’t going to take you seriously for suggesting adobe reader. Try Foxit or something similar.
@Jack Vermicelli @JOsh : I was using adobe reader previously. I notice problems like: heavy download, incompatible with certain pdf files & it occasionally connect me to the internet. Now I’m using Foxit Reader, thanks for sharing the info.
This is a good list and I will be using this for sure
Good stuff thanks
Has anyone tried 360desktop? Is it as good as advertised?
I think a nice addition would be Mixero. It’s for Twitter, and it has a really nice interface. They also have it for iPhone / iTouch also, just as a side note. I thought that was neat.
http://www.techsupportalert.com/
I am not spamming here. That site is suggesting most efficient freewares and freewares only. You can find free software reviewed with download page links. Try it. Thank You.
Oooo, good stuff. Thanks
How can you criticise adobe reader,, if it doesn’t view certain PDF’s then it is the PDF’s fault and has most likely been created with a 3rd party creater, PDF is adobe technology, and their reader IS the best on the market for reading legit PDF’s, if you prefer another inteface, then that is fine, however to say you experience problems reading certain PDFs, that is most likely because it was created in a 3rd party app such as primopdf, and or PDF creator, and as such you should criticise that app, and not the reader……
It’s easy to criticize Adobe Reader. Of all the .pdf viewers I’ve used, Reader/Acrobat is the biggest and slowest. Sumatra or Evince for example, each take up a small fraction of the space, and open much quicker.
I also recommend using Sumatra or Evince as your default PDF viewer, while keeping Adobe’s at hand for some cases. For instance, I recently tried to copy some text from a PDF in Sumatra and, it turned out, Sumatra doesn’t have that function. As far as I remember, neither does Evince.
@Jack Vermicelli : The reason it is the Biggest Jack is because the other writers cut corners to cut code size, hence why you get incompatibility issues, its the whole CD / MP3 issue, they are smaller, but they lose quality, at the end of the day, adobe designed PDF, you need to accept this fact first, you also need to accept that it doesn’t suffer with any compatibility issues with Original PDF’s, therefore it is the best reader, the list isn’t selling smallest / quickest, its reccomending the best, and seeing as Adobe is the only free reader 100% compatible with original PDF’s, then it is the only one that you can install that it will open and display correctly original PDF’s… FACT !
I’d add unlocker (google it), really nice programs to move, remove, rename or copy files which are in use. One of the programs I first install on a new pc.
About AVG virusscanner: It’s crap. I used it for years because a lack of better. But lately I had enough of it and found Avira. Works 10 times better.
For unzipping I prefer winRAR, but never tried 7zip so can only say which one i like and you should maybe try :)
And last for camstudio I prefer hypercam. Hypercam requires less from your pc ;)
Regards,
Luc.
Hi Luc, thanks for your comment. I am using Microsoft Security Essential (MSE) currently & not sure whether it is powerful enough to catch those worms. The good thing for AVG & MSE is that it always keep your virus definition up to date.
As for the hypercam, I will definitely give it a try.
I love ur collections, But would be fantastic had u had added foxit pdf reader which has a better added features of any pdf reader like highlighting text
Adobe Reader is a joke. Big, slow, bugridden. You say “But it displays “Real”(tm) PDF’s like it should.”
PDF is a standard now, and Adobe Reader should be able to handle “Fake” PDF’s without having a nervous breakdown because “*********!!!!!1! This wasn’t written by Acrobat????!?”
I use Foxit on Windows to read, and I use Okular on Linux (KDE) because Reader just plain sucks.
Should Adobe Reader ever stop behaving like a spoiled fat kid I’ll use it.
Why should it cope with fakes,, what a silly thing to say, if you had written software to earn a income you wouldnt be saying this,,,…
That’s why Adobe will become irrelevant! This is honest criticism from users who obviously find much room for improvement.
Kruptos, http://www.kruptos2.co.uk/, is no longer free…
Ya, ur right, the author finally decided to commercialize it, however only for the latest version “Kruptos 2 Professional”. There download are still available for older version in many download websites. Google it to get those links.
Adobe Reader? No way.
Foxit Reader, all the way.
I would like to suggest in the place of AVG & MSE that you try out either Avira or Super AntiSpyware (both free) which are not only small downloads but really powerful free anti virus/spyware cleaners.
As for this whole Adobe Reader, while I do agree that it’s bloatware on the consumer side of this, I don’t agree that it should conform to handling 3rd party hacked up PDF files. They created the standard as it is today and should not be expected to read anything beyond that. Foxit is well worth its glory in PDF reading but there’s no point in downing the program that started it all just because other PDF editors code their files improperly.
Nice to see another person who lives in the real world
Great list of applications. I would add one more anti-virus program. Avast is a good app. I’ve been using it for about a year now and have no complaints what-so-ever. I think it rivals AVG.
Doesn’t look like Kruptos is free.
What do you all think about the free version of Clary Utilities?
http://www.glaryutilities.com/
I’ve been using for awhile and find its registry cleaner and defrag superior to store bought.
That’s Glary Utilities
Kruptos is no longer free. I have updated the list to replace Kruptos with TrueCrypt, be sure to give it a try.
Fabulous list – and well put together. I have most of this list on my PC – one new piece of freeware available for those interested in photo-manipulation is Photoscape and it deserves a place on this list or perhaps boost the number of applications on the list to a round 50 !
Once again thanks for putting this list together.
As well as sumatra and foxit, another pdf reader with slightly more features is xchange pdf viewer. The free version is very useful if not as fully featured as the paid ones. I find it useful for converting pdf’s to images fast and easily, to include inline in phpBB forums rather than pdf’s as downloads, and the text copying to clipboard and rubber stamping / marking up of pdf’s is good too :-)
http://pdf-xchange-viewer.en.softonic.com/
NOT as quick as foxit or sumatra but does work very well.
I enjoyed the article and had no problems reading it. Thanks for publishing!
Personally i am not a huge fan of winamp for playing my audio files, but I do see the merit in that program. If you’re having issues with winamp, you may want to try out mediamonkey. I love mediamonkey purely for its ease in finding all of my music and other sound clips, beyond that, it’s fairly similar to most other audio software.
No problem, I will try out mediamonkey for sure. Thanks for sharing the info.
I must say Adobe has become crap. It used to be decent, but they took a good thing a ruined it. I use Foxit now and am a very happy user of said software. It does the job much more efficiently and without all the security holes. In fact, I have tried to purge all Adobe software from my system and have been successful minus Adobe Flash. Are the any alternative plugins available?
CCleaner is not free!
I have just visited the website http://www.ccleaner.com/, it is still under freeware & available for download.
CCLEANER is free!
Does anyone know of a good open source Blu-ray player?
Has anyone tried Rocketdock ? Is it a resource hog ?
dude you got one more subscriber, thnx a lot for such a nice posts and yeah a wonderful plugin.
If I need to view a manual for a car or copier or whatever published in pdf format, I have no control over what progam authored it. If Reader chokes on it, then I want to use whichever program will read it and display it quickly. Would Google be as useful if it was not tolerant of minor spelling mistakes and kept saying “syntax error” like an old BASIC interpreter?
I used to HATE pdfs because Adobe was s-l-o-w and crashed alot.
Good list. I do not have to agree with every one of your selections to say that.I am gonna try File Recovery in hopes that it will recover files my 84yr old dad keeps loosing with his ANCIENT DOS shareware word processer which he uses as a file manager! Undelete used to work until win 95. Sigh.
